Radnja je sme\u0161tena u savremenu Hrvatsku optere\u0107enu siroma\u0161tvom, nepravdom i korumpiranim vo\u0111stvom. Kao glavna prepreka njihovoj sre\u0107i i izbavljenju stoji groteskna figura Dinka Horvata (Boris Isakovi\u0107), lokalnog magnata, koji je zapravo eksponent samodopadljivog silni\u0161tva i zloupotreba koje \u010dine oni koji dr\u017ee konce u rukama.<\/p>\n<p>Scenario Rajka Grli\u0107a i Anta Tomi\u0107a nastao je na osnovu romana Miroslava Krle\u017ee <em>Na rubu pameti<\/em> (1938), koji govori o pobunjenom intelektualcu, pripadniku gra\u0111anstva, odnosno o \u010doveku koji je ustao protiv sopstvenog konformizma i hipokrizije dru\u0161tva u kom prednja\u010de \u201ecilindra\u0161i\u201c, kako pisac imenuje samozvanu elitu. U filmu je taj \u010dovek ugledni advokat Maks, branilac dvostrukog ubice Horvata, va\u017ene karike u dr\u017eavnoj privredi, koji se nakon izre\u010dene osloba\u0111aju\u0107e presude okre\u0107e protiv svog klijenta, tvrde\u0107i da je ovaj ipak kriv. Istovremeno, on se okre\u0107e protiv sebe, odnosno svega \u0161to je do tada bio, a o \u010demu progovara javno pred sudom nakon \u0161to je optu\u017een za klevetu (\/povredu \u010dasti\/nano\u0161enje du\u0161evne boli?), posle \u010dega \u0107e poku\u0161ati da ispravi nepravdu i spase sopstvenu du\u0161u. U svemu \u0107e mu pomo\u0107i Nina, ljubav iz mladosti i \u201e\u017eena sa pro\u0161lo\u0161\u0107u\u201c, a uskoro \u0107e im se pridru\u017eiti i o\u0161te\u0107eni Horvatovi biv\u0161i radnici.<\/p>\n<p>Film se prvenstveno oslanja na odnose i sukobe izme\u0111u troje likova u korumpiranom dr\u017eavnom kontekstu. Maks je umnogome odre\u0111en svojom profesijom koja se \u010desto nalazi pred moralnim izazovima. Iako se \u010dini da je ovoga puta stvar oti\u0161la predaleko, ostaje nejasno je li njegova pobuna podstaknuta li\u010dnom uvredom, poni\u017eenjem i sujetom, ili probu\u0111enom eti\u010dkom odgovorno\u0161\u0107u. Dok u jednom trenutku teatralno preuzima odgovornost za svoje postupke, u drugom, pred \u017eenom koju voli, poput deteta optu\u017eenog za nesta\u0161luk, on upire prstom na svog kolegu (Janko Popovi\u0107 Volari\u0107) koji je u Maksovom prisustvu podmetnuo dokaze u korist klijenta. Povr\u0161no prikazan odnos sa \u0107erkama i suprugom, neobja\u0161njivi povremeni gubici svesti i lascivne dosetke ne poma\u017eu nam mnogo da jasnije sagledamo glavni lik. Iako pretpostavljamo da \u0107e kao po\u017ertvovani ustanik zavredeti na\u0161e simpatije, Maks ipak ostaje (suvi\u0161e le\u017eeran) gre\u0161nik i cinik kog nismo voleli. Sa druge strane, Ninin lik dozvoljava da bude tuma\u010den kao ideal koji se vra\u0107a iz daleka, neko ko advokata podsti\u010de na ispravnu odluku. Naime, kao Horvatov zakleti neprijatelj, ona stupa na scenu u kriti\u010dnom trenutku za Maksa, u momentu izricanja osloba\u0111aju\u0107e presude. Crvenokosa <em>femme fatale<\/em>, uz to bogata udovica, \u00a0koja se vra\u0107a iz Rima, grada-simbola, neprestano izaziva licemere i du\u0161ebri\u017enike. Nasuprot njima, Dinko Horvat je apsolutno zlo, produ\u017eena ruka dr\u017eave i njen reprezent, predstavljen tako da izgleda kao da su se svi zlikovci i sva nepravda u Hrvatskoj slili u njega. Reditelj \u010desto snima dr\u017eavne simbole u pozadini ustanova i dr\u017eavnih aktera, poput zatvora i potpla\u0107enih sudija, konstantno nas podse\u0107aju\u0107i ko zapravo producira farsu. Niko nije po\u0161te\u0111en \u2013 Horvatovim vicevima smeju se i ministar i biskup.<\/p>\n<p>Provokativna tema i \u010dinjenica da Grli\u0107 ne povla\u0111uje svojim junacima, ve\u0107 sugeri\u0161e da niko nije potpuno nevin, \u010dine ovaj film uzbudljivim i otvorenim za tuma\u010denja. Tome doprinosi i pitoresknost likova oboga\u0107enih klasi\u010dnim elementima noar filma, ali i dobra gluma gotovo \u010ditavog ansambla. Sa druge strane, otvorena kritika sistema koja podrazumeva pominjanje aktuelnih politi\u010dkih stranaka poput HDZ-a na trenutke preti da bude svedena na pamflet, dok bi sam rasplet mogao da se pro\u010dita kao poruka da je brutalno nasilje kona\u010dno re\u0161enje.
